Sustainability Overview
Splash is committed to creating WASH sustainable projects – this spans site engagement, financial sustainability, spare parts and maintenance post implementation, ongoing government support, and environmental sustainability.
Splash has created a sustainability plan that focuses on working with individual schools to improve site engagement. This plan aims to equip schools to pay for long-term project costs as soon as possible. To support sustained service delivery at each school, Splash currently provides five years of major spare parts for the drinking water filter system, alongside technical assistance.
We are piloting an application process and a co-funding structure that engages with school stakeholders to prepare sustainability plans and facilitate local resource mobilization initiatives. These process includes working with sites to develop school-based Operation and Maintenance plans beyond Splash’s commitment of direct support. These initiatives encourage schools to plan and estimate budget allocation/resourcing to ensure the WASH infrastructure is maintained by the school independently.
Splash trains school and third-party vendors to ensure sites have the tools and expertise needed to keep systems operable over time.
Splash has worked with water kiosks at selected Splash sites to generate revenue by selling water. Profits from these kiosk sales are retained by the school to fully cover the costs of maintenance and repairs of the system over time.
