Introduction
The goal of the Splash program is to improve the behaviors of children through applying proven behavioral theories and best practices to fit within the context of urban institutions such as schools and orphanages. Secondarily, we aim to improve a child’s experience with WASH at their site. The majority of Splash's work focuses on schools, thus this overview also emphasizes our school-based model.
The target behaviors for children are all pertaining to hygiene and therefore the “Behavior Change for Children” Program will also be referenced as the “Splash Hygiene Program.” The two are interchangeable.
Primary Outcomes
- Washing hands at critical times (before eating and after using the toilet)
- Drinking safe water
- Proper use of sanitation facilities
Secondary Outcomes
- Clean school compound
- Proper menstrual hygiene management
- Good personal hygiene practices (including brushing teeth, wearing clean clothes, etc.)
- Water conservation
Behavior Change for Children relies on three core programmatic approaches. The first is making the behavior accessible through appropriate infrastructure. The second is influencing behaviors through subconscious triggers within an enabling environment. The third is changing behaviors through cognitive approaches and education. Each method consists of interventions that aim to achieve behavior initiation and eventually transform conscious behavior into a habit. The various interventions work in combination to influence a child’s knowledge, attitudes, abilities, and norms thereby changing his or her character for lasting habit formation and change.
