Infrastructure for Behavior Change
Children need access to necessary infrastructure in order to achieve the desired behavior change program outcomes.
*See Chapter 3, Infrastructure Standards, for detailed information about handwashing and drinkning stations, sanitation facilities and water installation standards, including design and ratios.
Desired Behavior | Necessary Infrastructure |
---|---|
Washing hands at critical times | 1. Soap 2. Handwashing stations within 10 steps of latrine 3. Mirrors above handwashing station |
Drinking safe water | 1. Water bottles 2. Drinking stations with ability to fill bottles or directly drink from the station |
Proper use of sanitation facilities | 1. Water for flushing 2. Trash bins 3. Sufficient number of toilets separated by gender |
Clean school compound | 1. Degradable and non-degradable trash bins around school compound (ideally within each classroom, and at a minimum on each floor) |
Proper menstrual hygiene management | 1. Trash bins, water tap and soap tray for MHM within every female latrine for schools with girls over the age of 10 |
Good personal hygiene practices | 1. (Optional) Hygiene kit which could include toothbrush, re-usable pad for girls, comb |
Water conservation | 1. (Optional) Rainwater harvesting |
Splash supports sites to achieve the necessary infrastructure through the following programmatic components:
Soap Provision | Soap drives (see below detail), purchased by school or donated by outside party. (Note: Splash will only donate soap to sites if handwashing infrastructure is installed prior to Teacher Training, see explanation and more information here) |
Handwashing and Drinking Stations | See Infrastructure Chapter for details on station design and ratios |
Toilets | See Infrastructure Chapter for details on design and ratios |
Water Bottles | Bottle drive children bring in bottles. Optional: make a game out of it and have the children do some artwork on the outside and make sure the bottles dont have scratches. It is recommended that this activity takes place twice a year to ensure the bottles are clean. |
Water for flushing | See Infrastructure Chapter (Sanitation) for details |
Trash bins for compound | Purchased by school, made by children using buckets, or one-time donation by Splash. These could also be given as an incentive. |
Trash bins for MHM | Purchased by school or one-time donation by Splash |
WHEN: Splash implements the above interventions after an MOU is signed with a site, and within a window of training (see details in "Education" Section).
